Unpacking Turin’s Independent Scene: Highlights & Discoveries at The Others Art Fair
Every year, when Artissima takes over Turin, the real pulse of independent contemporary culture beats inside The Others Art Fair. Visiting the exhibition this week alongside Arianna, we stepped into an energetic showcase where independent galleries, street artists, and underground pioneers bridge the gap between public space and curated exhibition rooms.
While the eternal debate around street art transitioning into gallery spaces continues to fuel panel discussions, seeing this work up close reminds me why we love it in the first place: raw authenticity, technical mastery, and a relentless urge to communicate.
Highlights from the Independent Circuit
- Ache77: Having previously acquired Ache77’s prints through Firenze’s gallery, seeing his signature stencil portraits mounted on riveted metallic panels was a standout moment. The striking contrast between delicate facial expressions and industrial surfaces demonstrates how stencil art evolves beyond brick walls.
- Gec’s Recycled Pop Icons: Gec delivers a sharp commentary on consumerism and classic art history with his stencil of the Mona Lisa rendered on stripped, corrugated shipping cardboard. The rough textures of the packaging material add an extra layer of meaning to an iconic silhouette.
- MrFjodor’s Urban Chameleon: Known for his environmental messages, MrFjodor brought a remarkable 3D wooden cut-out chameleon adorned with urban landscapes, machinery, and a wind turbine. It’s a vivid representation of adaptability in modern ecosystems.
- THEFIRM / “YES MAN OFFICE” by Fè (Federica Sutti): One of the most talked-about installations in the fair. Federica Sutti creates a dystopian corporate workspace complete with a desk, mechanical forms, and satirical manifestos. With slogans like “Harvesting Consent”, “Outstanding Compliance (thank you for never asking why)”, and “The sun leaves early. You don’t.”, Sutti delivers a brilliantly sharp critique of modern workplace obedience.
